PITTSBURGH — Soldiers & Sailors Memorial Hall & Museum Trust, Inc. will host their annual Memorial Day celebration on Monday, May 30, 2016 from 11 a.m. until 4 p.m.

Our free event is the only celebration of this type held in Pittsburgh and is open to the public. It begins at 11:00 a.m. in the Auditorium with a reflective ceremony remembering all fallen Pennsylvanian service members from the War on Terrorism.  Pennsylvania has lost nearly 300 service members in our wars in Afghanistan and Iraq.  Soldiers & Sailors invites everyone to please join in honoring our fallen, followed by our patriotic celebration both in the museum and outside on the plaza & front lawn.

“Each year Soldiers & Sailors Memorial Hall & Museum recognizes this national holiday with appreciation and purpose.  We invite the community to join us as we maintain the tradition to observe the true meaning of Memorial Day – to honor and remember the men and women who died while serving and made the ultimate sacrifice to our country”, said President & CEO John F. McCabe.  “ We hope the community finds time during this special day to visit the Memorial, explore the Museum, and enjoy the many activities happening on our plaza and lawn.”

Two unique attractions this year include Soldiers & Sailors new exhibit “Rally Round the Flag” featuring 14 rarely seen flags from the museum’s collection.  Each flag was chosen to evoke memories of past events of our collective national military history (details attached). And, the 2016 U.S. Open Championship Golf Trophy Tour will be displayed on the lawn.  Visitors can have their picture taken with the trophy and enter a chance to win tickets to the final round of the U.S. Open.

Activities throughout the day include, a special USCT Drum Corp appearance, our “Patrioteer” Challenge, a corn bread eating contest and a patriotic concert performance by The Brass Roots, ensemble-in-residence, at 3:00 p.m.   Other fun activities include children’s fun house and craft area, face painting, balloon artist, costume characters, photo booth, a chance to win raffle prizes and more. Country music station Y108 will be on hand with a live broadcast from Noon to 4 p.m. Admission to the memorial and museum are free.

Beverages & traditional food will also be available for purchase and individuals are encouraged to bring blankets and chairs to picnic on our front lawn. Visit www.soldiersandsailorshall.org for further details.

There is no better place to be on Memorial Day than Soldiers & Sailors Memorial Hall & Museum.  So, honor them with your presence.

Soldiers & Sailors is the nation’s only memorial and museum dedicated to honoring the men and women of all branches of service, and in all capacities (Active, Reserve, Guard). The historic building was designed by renowned architect Henry Hornbostel and has exhibits covering all of America’s conflicts from the Civil War through Afghanistan. The museum offers a unique look into American history by telling the stories of the individuals that served our country through military equipment and personal mementos.
